Crazy Horse Road Bridge
September 08, 2005
Located in the rural area of north Salinas, the Crazy Horse Road Bridge that crossed the seasonal Gabilan Creek was in need of a make-over. Supported by interlocking 12” x 18” timbers, abutments and a matrix of steel railroad rails, the old bridge was outdated and in dire need of replacement.
In early August, the “Team in Blue” was awarded the task of installing a pre-cast concrete arch culvert unit. The new design will create a single span, two-lane bridge that will not require placing a support system in the streambed, leaving the streambed unobstructed throughout the project site upon completion. The main construction components include the removal of the existing bridge, removal of existing roadway around the bridge, the installation of concrete structural components, positioning the pre-cast arch units, raising the roadway on each side and new roadway construction.
The project required many items of work that the Don Chapin Company is most efficient at including demolition, driven piles, large complex concrete footings and support structures, pre-cast concrete placement, grading and reconstruction of road surfaces. As well, the environmental aspect of the project was to have “0” impact on the habitat and leave the site when completed as we found it upon beginning “or better.”

As the substructure of the bridge was completed, the pre-cast structural components of the bridge were lowered into place. Our team looks forward to the completion of this project with the construction of the new roadway.
